Music

The National curriculum states that:

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

At Sparsholt C of E Primary school we aim to give all of our pupils the opportunity to develop a love of music, to have the opportunity to play and perform to others and to find the joy that music offers.

We have developed our music curriculum, with the support of the Hampshire Music service, to ensure that we meet and go beyond the National Curriculum aims set out below.

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

We ensure that children from Year 1 onwards have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through offering peripatetic music lessons with our in-house peripatetic music teacher, Mrs Leitzell and through providing peripatetic music lessons through Hampshire Music service. In addition, all children including those in Reception, have the opportunity to learn how to play different musical instruments as part of their curriculum music lessons, with Mrs Leitzell working with different classes each term. Currently, children have the opportunity to learn the following instruments either through peripatetic music lessons or through Curriculum music: a range of percussion instruments, recorder, ukulele, guitar, keyboard/piano, flute and brass.

We ensure that all children have purposeful opportunities to create, play and perform including playing instruments and singing in our many school events including assemblies, Harvest Festival, Christmas Nativity and KS2 Christmas Kaleidoscope, Easter Service, Summer whole school performance and in our dedicated music concerts to name but a few.
