History

Our Vision

History teaching at Sparsholt C of E Primary School is to encourage pupils to develop an appreciation and understanding of the past, evaluating a range of primary and secondary sources. Our ‘historians’ will be able to explain clearly how these sources give us an insight about how people around the World used to live and how these interpretations may differ. The children will be taught to make links between these areas of learning, with the aim of developing engaged, motivated and curious learners that can reflect on the past and make meaningful links to the present day.

EYFS/KS1

In the EYFS/KS1, history is taught as integral part of the topic work following the KS1 national curriculum and with links to the EYFS area of learning 'Understanding the World'.  The children will enjoy topics such as 'Kings and Queens', 'Water Water Everywhere' and 'The Great fire of London'. These topics will enable the children to explore how people’s lives, including their own, change over time. The topics are launched with exciting ‘hook’ activities such as a visit from the creative history team and trips to the Sea City museum and Arundel castle.

Here they will enjoy 'hands on' and interactive learning opportunities where they will find out about the lives of significant people and events from the past.

KS2

In the KS2, the children continue to develop chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British, Local and World History. The children study a range of periodic times through topics such as 'Stones, Bones and the Metal man', 'Britain Under Attack' and 'We can do it!' As in KS1, the topics are launched in exciting ways such as a visit from the Winchester Royal theatre company, themed days in school and trips to places such as Butser Ancient Farm. All of the topics have been planned to include a range of practical first hand experiences and to develop the children's enquiry skills.

The curriculum across the school uses ideas from the Hampshire History curriculum and follows a stepped approach to learning. The medium-term planning is linked to the progression of skills document (see below)

What the children say
